Slain NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s father refuses to see Kerala CM V S Achuthanandan and home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who had flown to Bangalore to give their condolences.
Unnikrishnan reportedly said he would commit suicide if any politician entered his house.
He had told his friends that his son, whose valour was witnessed by the entire country, did not belong to Kerala alone but to the entire nation.
Looks like these shameless politicians have yet to have a wake up call!
When it comes to Malayalam fonts for web designers, there seems to be a lack of quality Malayalam fonts. However, if you observe Malayalam print and more traditional media, there are some very cool fonts being used in movie posters, news papers, magazines, and advertising.
While doing a little searching for Malayalam fonts, I came across—”My Experiments with Type”—a presentation made at Typography Day 2008 IDC IIT Bombay in March 2008, by Malayalam font designer, Hashim P M, who currently is the Chief Designer at Desgin Difference Cochin.
Coming from an Engineering background, Design was like liberation for me. The joy of creation is overwhelming. And I fell in love with… type! I found that those little specks of black can make a very big impact. Photography, Printing, Publication Design, Graphics… Design gave me a whole new world. I have been enjoying every moment ever since.
Here are some of Hashim’s fonts from his presentation:
Vartha
Designed for Malayala Manorama as a student project at IDC
Indulekha
The most popular Malayalam Font, making it the Helvetica of Malayalam fonts.
Revivarma
First Calligraphic typeface in Malayalam
Ambili
First Malayalam serif font
Chihnangal
Symbols Typeface
Kingini
Designed when he worked for Malayala Manorama
Puthuma
Ambadi
Font used in the redesigned Mathrubhumi Weekly headlines
For more of Hashim’s Malayalam fonts check out his IDC presentation.
There are a lot of beautiful Malayalam and other Indic fonts out there, but good online resources for purchasing these fonts are lacking. I hope designers like Hashim will soon start to make some of their beautiful fonts available for web designers.
Mashithantu is an adipoli Malayalam to Engilsh and English to Malayalam online dictionary. The dictionary contains over 58,000 Malayalam words and almost 24,000 English Words. What makes Mashithantu amazing are the following features:
Word Correction
Mashithantu has a spell checking engine which will spit out similar words or correct words. For people like me who struggle with Malayalam spellings, this is a fabulous feature. Currently you have to double click the suggested word to select it. If this could be a link like in Google, that will help avoid any user confusion.
Double Click
Any English or Malayalam word on the Mashithantu site can be double clicked to initiate a search.
Crowd Sourcing
To help the dictionary grow, users have the option to provide missing words and the details of the missing words via the add words page.
Manglish Support
Mashithantu has excellent Manglish support both for entering Malayalam words, and for reading search results. One of the cool features of the site is the on-screen Malayalam keyboard with Manglish available as a tooltip over each Malayalam letter. Either a toggle to switch to a Manglish keyboard or Manglish visible along with Malayalam letter will be a nice addition.
For more features and to give the dictionary a try, visit the Mashuthantu site.
